T he church, consecrated in 1156, was built on the site of a former clas church. The eastern part of the nave and the south aisle date from the fourteenth century and preserve their original roofs. The west tower is fifteenth century and the north aisle was rebuilt by Benjamin Ferrey as part of his restoration of the church in 1871–2. The church contains a wealth of interesting furnishings: a ninth-century carved cross slab, possibly reused as the tombstone of Madoc ap Maredudd, prince of Powys, who died in 1160; a fifteenth-century octagonal font; seventeenth-century altar table and rails; a reredos made up from an assemblage of medieval and post-Reformation carved woodwork; an early nineteenth-century ‘Gothick’ organ case; and panels of heraldic glass, painted by David Evans in 1838, fixed to the aisle windows and showing the coats of arms of the Welsh border families.
