Have our graduates changed? Are they seeking something different from the student volunteers of the 1960s and 1970s? Yes, there are many more opportunities for students to travel abroad. One of the most enterprising organizations that offer students work exchanges in other countries is AIESEC [Association for International Exchanges of Students in Economics and Commerce]. It attracts some of the brightest young men and women, and its membership reflects Canada’s changing multicultural personality.

To bring some clarity to the challenges inherent to the internationalization of education, we look briefly at the national context and the changing fashion in concepts of development and internationalization. However, we do not wish to imply that the relationships between internationalization, universities, professors, and the education of students resulted from an orderly planning process. They did not. Essentially, they have resulted from many independent choices occurring within a shared context that gives them a loose connection.

What should universities be doing to encourage internationalization?
