He did not die, but never recovered completely, and thereafter could manage only short visits to Paris. In July 1907 he spent a few days in the capital in such a miserable state of health that he did not even see his friend Vallette. Thanks to the generosity of two fellow authors he returned to Paris on 7 October, but was too weak to venture outside his room.
