Smith & Wesson listened but took a different path and simply chambered the Model 29 for the new 41 Magnum cartridge. It was known as the Model 57 and was accompanied by an oversized Military & Police version, the Model 58. Both six-guns and ammunition were deemed too heavy for police use; however, they did find a special niche with hunters and outdoorsmen. All of these six-guns are now gone. The Models 21, 22, 24, and 26 were dropped in 1966; the Models 29 and 19 in 1999; Model 25, 1991; Model 57, 1993; and even the original 357 Magnum was gone by 1994, preceded by the 1986 demise of the Highway Patrolman Model 28.
Ruger’s plans changed as far as chambering the Blackhawk in 44 Special, and instead the frame and cylinder were enlarged to become the 44 Magnum Blackhawk. By 1956, I had all three Ruger single actions: a 5 1⁄2-inch 22 Single-Six, a 4 5⁄8-inch 357 Blackhawk, and a 6 1⁄2-inch 44 Magnum Blackhawk. If neither Ruger nor I had ever advanced past this point I still would have been in pretty good shape for the balance of my six-gunnin’ life. However, no gun company has the option of staying the same. They either go forward, or slide back.
Now it was gone. However, Colt took a look at their Officers Model Match, added a distinctively shaped and heavy ribbed 6-inch barrel, smoothed the action, and finished the entire six-gun in Royal Blue. It is without doubt the finest double action ever produced by Colt, and some fans will say it is the finest double action ever—period. Over the years it has been offered in blued, nickel, and stainless steel versions, as well as in three other barrel lengths: 2-1⁄2, 4, and 8 inches. Never in my life did I lust for a six-gun as much as I did when Colt first started advertising the 4-inch blued Python.
