In terms of the group’s socio-cultural distinctiveness and continuity, the periphery has a lesser capacity for maintenance of the original cultural contents and for innovation from within, and may depend on the support of cultural tools provided by the core. A further aspect of the socio-cultural relationship is the tendency of the periphery to loosen its identification and to experience diminishing contacts and similarities with the group’s core, and eventually to drift away from recognizable belonging to the given ethno-religious group.
